French regional cluster Bretagne Pole Naval has launched a container-based shelter concept for onshore and offshore applications ranging from accommodation modules and control centres to air conditioning, water processing and power generation.
The BPN cluster comprises over 180 Brittany-based companies active in shipbuilding, marine renewable energy and oil & gas. The Shelti Breizh (Breton for ‘Brittany shelters’) range is the result of a team effort by BPN members led by Sofresid Engineering, industrial solutions group Actemium, shelter specialist ETT and SLCE (see SLCE, firm believers in reverse osmosis).
Shelti Breizh shelters can be based on standard 20- or 40-foot containers, or built to the client’s specifications. For medium- to long-term construction projects at remote sites, modules can be supplied for accommodation, offices, canteens, ablutions, sport and relaxation, utilities, etc.

Power shelters equipped with generator sets can be linked to modules housing HV/LV distribution equipment, switchgear, control & command equipment, frequency converters, batteries, electronic and IT systems, sensors and monitoring systems, and firefighting and hazard control systems. All can also be fitted with rooftop solar panels.
Shelti Breizh shelters can also be equipped to produce fresh, potable or chilled water, or steam. Other options include hot/cold air conditioning plant, hydraulic power and control centres complete with monitoring and communications equipment.

While the idea of using shipping containers as equipment shelters is by no means new, BPN has a new take on the concept. “We bring together companies that are used to working together, with each contributing proven know-how. The results include innovative, certified and custom solutions offering guaranteed reliability. Different cluster members specialise in everything from equipment integration to outfitting, electrical and mechanical engineering, structural design, painting, transportation logistics and on-site commissioning” says BPN managing director Anne-Marie Cuesta. BPN members have the expertise to design and build shelters to the client’s specifications and certification procedures, including ISO standards and the European Union’s ATEX directives for equipment operating in explosive atmospheres.
